Cd/dvd drive disappears

I would appreciate any suggestions as to why my computer stops recognizing my cd/dvd drive. When I reboot and open my computer the icon is there but, after a few minutes or if I open Nero to try to burn a disc the icon disappears. If I put a disc in to try an installation the drive tries to read but has trouble and eventually hangs up. I've used the drive to run a live linux disc, so I know it works without booting into windows. I'm running xp by the way.

Well, it seams like software conflict. When did this problem appear first time?
What did you install on your PC just before it happen? You should check and update your drivers for CD-rom in XP. Hope everything will be ok. :wave:
