cdrw and dvdr drives running slowly

  1. I have a friend who is experiencing slow play back on both his cdrw and dvdr drives.

    The drives are:

    HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8240B [CD-ROM drive]
    LG DVD-ROM DRD8160B [CD-ROM drive]

All he is doing is attempting to play back music cds. Apparently if he rips the music, RP plays them back at the correct speed.

No sure of the system, but it comprises:

    1.40 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP
    Gigabyte 7VTXE 1.x
256 of RAM (which I have suggested he add to)

I suspect the system is a Dell

    He is running XP SP2

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Many thanks!

Check that its in DMA mode and not PIO.
Obviously check the one your CD drive is on, that one just happens to be my hd for illustrative purposes only.
