CDs/DVDs not recognized if inserted post-start up

When I insert a CD/DVD into the drive it isn't recognized, unless the disk was already in the drive at the point of starting up.

For example, if I'm installing a program on 2 disks and need to insert the second disk to continue with installation it always fails since it can't recognize the new disk. Or, if I'm playing a CD and then insert a DVD, I still see the details of the now-replaced disk instead of the new one.

This is a compaq notebook with a lightscribe 8x DVDRW drive. I'm running Windows XP and even the "my computer" will list the wrong info.

Any ideas for what's happening?

Yeah it is a windows file system problem. the usual fix is to uninstall the IDE channel the drive is on and reboot. wihen windows restarts it will automatically reinstall the IDE channel and the drive.
