Compaq M700 won't recognize USB thumb drive

Recently bought a refurbished Compaq Armada M700 laptop running Windows 98SE. It has a standard USB port and will accept my "thumb drive" (flash drive), but will not recognize the device. 98SE just keeps saying "New hardware found" and asks for an installation disc. I have no trouble using the thumb drive on other computers.

Any ideas as to the problem? Is 98SE too old to work with thumb drives? Is there some kind of a plug-in I can download from somewhere?

Thanks...

Windows 98se will support USB flash drives but only with a driver. Different brands of flash drive usually require different drivers. You can usually go to the manufacturer's website and download it.
