Computer crashes with new burner installed

I purchased a Pioneer DVR-710 burner. When I removed to old one and installed this one, my computer starts up, goes into windows and then crashes. I have tried it in the master, slave and cable select mode with no luck.I have it set as a secondary device in the bois. I am running Windows XP Home. The screen goes blue and tells me windows has shut down to prevent damage to the system. Can anyone help me please

Just to confirm. If you try and boot without the burner installed everything works okay?

I put the old burner back in and everything works OK.

We see defective burners now and then. Not all that unusual for a device that cheaply made, and manufactured mostly by automated means. Nearly all such devices are made in Singapore, Korea, and China where the rest of us are expected to perform the quality control.
