He's 100% right. These are luxury items, and they're just upselling them like tons of other companies/fields do on a daily basis. There is NOTHING unethical or illegal about this. They're not upselling bread, meat, or food items like in Cuba. They're selling luxury items to well-to-do people that can afford to pay for these things.

It may not be illegal but it can absolutely be considered unethical. Contributing to the already massive demand and shortage problem isn't exactly respectable. Anyone claiming that scalping doesn't have a negative impact on availability at regular MSRP is full of crap.
That is... a valiant attempt to justify something so scummy, so terrible. Just because it is legal does not mean you aren't a terrible person for taking advantage of the situation to me. These people, be they young or not, are no better than those who participate in call center scams and the like.

I'm wondering if retailers are even allowed to sell above MSRP? Most contracts of this kind do not allow markup above MSRP, hence why you often see multiple retailers selling for the same MSRP price.
That said, car dealers are a notable exception in that you often see "dealer markup" on window stickers and you often have to negotiate that off the price of the car. Not that car dealers are equivalent to PlayStation scalpers.

Depending on what one does for a living. GPUs may not be a luxury item. Tools of a trade are never considered luxury items. Raising prices of GPU are however making them luxury items.

The price inflation is ABSOLUTELY the fault of scalpers. Here's why:
While ETH miners will continue to purchase in bulk (driving the overall shortage), the scalpers are adding to the scarcity by purchasing any of the remaining stock. They then turn around and double the list price, knowing the ETH miners (who will make that back easy) can afford even double the list value. The end result is that all scalpers are doing is jacking up the price for the few cards that are on the market, ensuring that only miners can afford them. Without the scalpers, more people would have the opportunity to purchase the few cards on the market, only at MSRP instead of double.

Manufacturer’s suggested retail price is not a strict rule. Legitimate businesses usually abide by those prices. Because profits are reasonably set at those prices for a reason. I have no problem with slightly going over MSRP. After all it is a suggested price. Scalpers on the other hand raise prices as if they want to get rich from selling just one item.
And taxes the hell out of you while doing it. Hell, the Beatles wrote a song about that over 50 years ago! Many famous people leave the UK to avoid taxation.
That depends on the manufacturer. There is no law to this effect but manufactures can, and do, set price guidelines including max and min selling prices. I do not know if Sony has any such language in their retailer contracts, but I have worked for technology companies who do control, to some extent, how resellers price the products.
The scalper problem is easily solved. If no one would buy from them, then guess what? Prices would come back to normal and some of those scalpers will be out of business because they will lose their *** when they can't sell their products for more than they paid for them.

There are always people who are willing to spend more than they should. There are also people who don't have a choice really...their GPU craps out or whatever.

I have been watching Best Buy for a few weeks and it's funny because the 6900xt and the 6800xt are not selling out liken they were. A few weeks ago they were sold the minute they posted them as in stock. Now they have been sitting there for days without going out of stock.
While it looks like these may be above MSRP, none of the devices in your link are in-stock, so it's a moot point. But also, I could not find MSRP for specific Manufacturers, such as Gigabyte, on their web page. I suspect this is intentional. And every manufacturer may have a different contract with BB or any other retailer.

It's really our fault that this is allowed to continue. Stop buying from scalpers if you don't believe in scalping. I see the flip side where they are making money on the demand, and it's a smart financial move. Though, setting up bots to buy the consoles is the scummy part. It gives no one a chance to buy one at retail. That's the part that grinds my gears.
Yes, someone may be willing. I think the key here is to eliminate the guys who are buying truckloads of products and scalping them versus one guy who buys a card and decides to sell the one unit he has, at a higher price than he paid for it.
It is tough if you have an immediate need. That's why I always keep my old GPU around in case the new one dies. It will get me by until I can get what I need. My point is if we can stop the masses from doing business with scalpers I think you will see fewer scalpers. I think the manufacturers could crack down on this, but I can see why it doesn't matter to them. They are getting paid, even if the scalpers are not.
Hmm, I wonder if it's looking at local stock or something. Nothing on that page shows in stock to me, except a couple of Radeon 6900s. All Nvidia GPU are listed as sold out.

Yeah I was talking about the 6900xt. MSRP is $999...they are asking $1699.999.
The only Nvidia card I see is a 3060.
EDIT: When I said all I was talking about all on my screen were supposed to be in stock because I had "exclude out of stock items" checked.

It sucks for us but I say it's just a job in reality. It's a good bit of work and essentially they are retail businesses at this point. As long as they are paying their taxes and doing everything according to local law there's not much anyone can do. If they are smart, they'd just get business licenses and that makes them untouchable. There's no use crying about it. It is what it is.
If you vehemently hate scalpers, just hope they get burned with inventory when supply makes a surprise jump that pushes the prices down quickly. It's happened a lot, look at toilet paper for God's sake. It's been going on for decades - it just had a different face back then.

Hell, that's CHEAP! Three months ago 6900XT was $2300 at Microcenter (and on the shelf).
