OK i have:

- Athlon 1.33ghz
- 512mb PC133
- Vivid!XS
- Abit KT7A-RAID mobo
- SB Live! 5.1
and i decided i wanted to overclock a bit, but then i looked at my CPU temp and it was running at 51º before id even started, so i overclocked anyway and the temp got to bout 58º overclocking it to 1.4ghz!
So i took my PC apart took off the heatsink and tried putting a different amount of thermal grease on my CPU. Did that and not a lot changed! So i then took it off again, put on a thermal pad, and put a small amount of grease on the core!
But......... i also put on an old 5000rpm K6-2 fan, atached to the side of the heatsink facing the wrong way, so it was sucking air off the heatsink
And now it runs a 1.5ghz, RUNNING AT 33º. WOW

Just an idea for u lot

Has anyone else ever put 2 fans like that on the heatsink??

I absolutely Do Not Recommend anything you have done, despite your apparent lower temps.
Running two fans off the motherboard header is also discouraged.

WARNING: Any attempt to operate the AMD Processors without a suitable cooling solution will result in permanent damage to the processor and potentially other components within the system.

AMD Thermal Solutions

Instructions for Arctic Silver

* If your heatsink has a thermal 'pad' mounted on it, this pad must be removed before using Arctic Silver thermal compound. Thermal pads are made with paraffin wax that melts once it gets hot. When it melts, it will fill in the microscopic valleys in the heatsink with wax. To minimize the permanent contamination of the mounting surface with wax, the thermal pad should be removed before it is used and melted. Never use heat or hot water to remove the pad, the heat will melt the wax into the heatsink.

* On the CPU, Arctic Silver thermal compound should only be applied to the top of the core.

* Only a very small amount of Arctic Silver is needed on modern CPU cores, about 1/2 the size of an uncooked grain of short-grain white rice or 1/4 of a BB.

well you're get AMAZING results, thermal pads are never as good as properly applied, quality compound. Hope it doesn't come to an end with a puff of smoke!

I dont think it will, its been on for 2 days without turning it off, and the temp only goes up to 38º after running 3Dmark a couple of times!!

How do u get screenshots into your message??

Host them on a web server then link to the image with the tags.... Read the site FAQ (link in my signature).

Check out this thread on Free Website Hosting for recommended web hosting.
Also try searching the forum as often these questions have been addressed properly (also available top right of the web page and in my signature). ;)

Im not very good at that sort of thing so i wont bother, but, seriously as i write this message my overclocked processor is running at 32º, and its been down to 29º!! Is there something wrong with that number! Could there be something wrong with the temperature monitor??

When its not overclocked the temperature is at 27º!

It reads the same both in VIA Hardware Monitor and Bios!!

Any Ideas

Apparently if you have the cash cucumber, go ahead and OC that Muther.
But also remember that lateral thinking never should go astray. If your comp becomes a hotplate to sizzle your steak on....so be it.
If after 1 month of intensive usage(run 3d2001 looped 500), and it's fine, well there may be something for all of us.
p.s. u aint got it living in ur fridge have u?:)

Good innovation but I have to add:
If its such a good method don't you think the Heatsink and fan manufacturers would have come up with this idea?
I have seen a few heatsinks for slot processors that have dual fans inline but never anything with a fan mounted on the side as well as the traditional one on the top. Hope it keeps running that cool :)

So u wouldnt recommend it then???
It goes up quite a lot after running 3D mark a couple of times, up to about 45º!
I'm gettin a new cooler after i get my GeForce4 :D , dont know whether to get a water cooler or not?? Any ideas??

OK thanx for your help!

If it works for you then go for it, but not all computers are the same so consider yourself lucky. Also, if you have the money then feel free to go for watercooling because it is supposedly really good. Personally, I don't have a couple hundred dollars to drop on watercooling so I'll stick with air cooling.

Check this out if you want to try and bring your idle temps down even further:

Arris man your a super bloke, i think you should win those prizes! FOR SURE!!! Every post ive made you've always been the first to reply, and it hasnt been complete *junk!! Its actually been real useful!!

:D :D :D

P.S i tried in a desperate attempt to try and win those prizes, but i dont actually know as much as i thought i did!

(*edited by mod)

Erm... thanks.

PS: There are 4 separate prizes..
Contest Details

A 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th prize.
Even if you didn't win the first prize there are 3 others even though you wouldn't want the GF4MX440 since your off to the states to get a GF4Ti4xxx there is a Kyro based Hercules graphics card and a 5.1(6 channel) sound card to be won.

So there is still a lot to contribute for... Including the 3ds forum community which you are now part of ;)
Hopefully you will find that enough of a reason to keep posting here :D

Yea im going to stick here for SURE, i used to be on PlanetHardware, but people dont post very often there!!

I could do with another Graphics card (even though im not going to win it) because we have 4 PC's all networked (FUN) and when playing LAN Cstrike 2 of the PC's cannot run very high graphics, around 800x600 OPENGL. Both have a 17" montitor, One of them is going to have my Kyro2 though.

Works a treat:D , im gonna get a new hsf soon though coz i dont like the idea of a makeshift one! I runs at 31º idle but heats up to 46º after playing Cstrike for a couple of hours!
But i shouldn't need to overclock the CPU soon, I leave for San Francisco, a week on Monday (GeForce4), WOO HOO:cool:

Anywayz c ya laterz

Enjoy San Francisco.
I've always wanted to take a tram down the hills that feature in the film Bullit with Steve McQueen(sp??). Taking a Vintage Mustang down would be even better but since I don't have a license it could cause trouble.
Anyway have a good time ;)

Thanks for the advice people, especially Arris, Uncleel, and Cheetah. I decided after what you wrote to go out and buy a new heatsink(got a bit scared:hotbounce) Got myself a Coolermaster one, itz not state of the art or anything but it cost £19 so im hoping it will be fine! Runs at 38º idle so its not too bad, and then goes up to 51º!

Thanks people :grinthumb

Did you get the Artic Silver? 51°c is w/i limits but a little high considering...
Check your temp w/ the case off, then consider adding a "blow hole" fan that will provide fresh air straight to the HSF, & don't forget an exhaust fan.
You want balanced air flow; not pressurizing or vacuuming.

I'm runnning a Athy 1.2 w/ Vantec copper cooler, delta fan & artic silver @ 34°c
