Hey guys,
long time lurker... first time poster. You guys seem like you always know what you're doing... so here is a bugger of a problem for ya. Long story short, I recently moved to south korea and brought my BFG 6600gt with me to throw in a system over here. Get here, get my system set up (specs below) and I get home to start playing some games. I install windows/mobo drivers (AGP, LAN, etc) and then reboot and install the vid card drivers. Reboot again, expectin gthe "New hardware found msg" but don't see it. Meh, I figure to myself... seems to have installed alright. So, I go ahead and install a few games along with directx and game won't work (all Valve games to be specific, HL2, Lost Coast, CSS). Install FEAR, and I get a "Unable to enable proper video mode" or some such thing like that. Anyway, I reformat and go through the whole process again... same errors. BUGGER! So, I open up dxdiag to test my direct3D settings and I get this:
No problems found.

DirectDraw test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 7 test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 6 (No hardware supported display modes found): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 6 (No hardware supported display modes found): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)

Soo... seems like D3D 8 and 9 are broken... whatever that means. Why is this? I am also getting the device showing up as a PCI device under device manager. Grrrrrr. Why can't this stupid thing just work? It worked fine in Canada before I came over, and there doesn't appear to be any damage to the card. The card is also in all the way.

Thanks for any help you guys can provide! :)

You must to buy , an good real video card ,Nvidia or Ati (originals), and install after the last driver posible , incuded direct x Jul 2006

Reinstall DirectX 9.0C and then reboot. Remove the video drivers and let windows recognize the card as a Standard VGA Adaptor or whatever and then when it asks for the drivers, click cancel and install the latest Forceware drivers(version 91.31 is the latest). If it doesn't work then report back. Also, have u tried removing the card and reseating it?

Just tried that... no good. Reseating the card makes no difference either. Any more suggestions?

PS - thanks for the help :)

No problemo. Could u try Everest Home Edition or SIW and get information from it regarding ur video card? Does it show up correctly there?

yeah, just installed everest... seems like everything checks out in that...

Woah, huge posts! :) But the odd thing is, if it comes out okay in Everest, what seems to be the problem? Wait awhile, KingCody or wolfram will be able to help u out better. I'm outta ideas.

Some mistake games with this sistem anyway , you tried an good video card , update to direct x ,i believe problems , comes from the 64 tehnology , not work any aplications under 32 , or hardware problem with incompatibility , i really don't know why ! You tried , don't work ?Leave this and play another game. :) Best regards from Sovindustry

None of the things u recommended are of any help. Keep such useless comments to urself. Try to find a way to help him, not telling him to "go play another game".
@Superbman, did u try removing the drivers(all of them) and re-installing them? That's the only thing I can think of.

hey rage,
yeah, i tried doing a complete format, didn't work... :(
well, hopefully someone has an idea of how to fix this?
Is is maybe the motherboard? Is the ALi chipset flaky with nVIDIA cards? I don't think it should be... but who knows?

sorry, but the only thing I would have suggested would have been trying other drivers, and you've already done that.

good luck :)

shizza... tried contacting asrock support... they gave me this:
Dear Sir,

Thank you for purchase ASRock product.

Please follow the steps for try.

1. Update BIOS P2.10 (We recommend to use windows BIOS.)

Please refer 939A8X-M BIOS download page. (Download here)

2. Enter the BIOS, press F9 load BIOS default setting.

3. Enable "AGP P2P Deep Fifo" function with below path.

Advanced -> Chipset Configuration -> AGP P2P Deep Fifo -> Enable

4. Press F10 save changes and exit BIOS.

5. Install different versions of forceware VGA driver (84.21, 81.98…etc)

(Before install VGA driver, please remove elder VGA driver first.)

6. Change another VGA card on your PC and set your VGA card on another PC for test.

7. Change powerful power supply

8. Reinstall OS.

(1.Please use normal windows setup CD; 2. Do not use ghost to recover your OS)

Didn't work... sigh... guess I'm not meant to play games here. Regardless, it's a pain cuz this system is basically a gaming system (mid range) but gaming nonetheless. Doing the vid card swap is kinda hard cuz other systems aren't easy to come by here. shizza shizza shizza!
Well, thanks for the help anyway guys! :)

Is your card properly recognized by Windows? Check that in the Device Manager. Check the Display adapter tab. It should say Geforce 6600GT or something similar.

If not, install your AGP 8X drivers (sorry if I didn't read that before) from Asrock.

And, just a single thing:

Have you connected the power plug to the video card itself?

Please report back, and we'll do our BEST to help you.
Good luck! :)

Do all video cards support DX9? I was thinking that on Newegg's website, some cards only had DX8 or 7 or 6. Is that just what's preinstalled, or does the card only support an earlier version?

Do all video cards support DX9? I was thinking that on Newegg's website, some cards only had DX8 or 7 or 6. Is that just what's preinstalled, or does the card only support an earlier version?

Not all cards fully support DX9 features. DX9 cards are backwards compatible with DX8, DX7 etc.
However, a DX8 card for example, is not fully compatible with DX9. While some games that require DX9 cards MAY work with DX8 cards, it should run sluggish or have video errors.

I think Radeon 9500\9600 onwards all support DX9. As for GeForce, I think it's the FX series onwards which supports DX9. So his card definitely should support DX9 hardware-wise.

Good luck! :)

Yup, shows up as 6600gt under device manager and AGP drivers are installed properly. Just tried switching the power connector (thought maybe that was bad) but nope, no good. Same thing.

Also, I know this card supports all DX versions up to 9 because I had been playing HL2/HL2:LC/CS:S all before I left for Korea. I wish I could get my hands on a second AGP system to test this card... but taht's more or less impossible here.

If Rage's solution doesn't work, we're completely out of ideas. Hopefully, changing the chipset drivers will solve your problem.

Good luck! :)

frig, no good mates... i guess i'm outta luck then
i'll see if i can pick up a cheap agp card around here to see if i can troubleshoot this problem but still, sucky that i even have to do that.
thanks a lot for the help guys! really appreciate it!

Didn't mention earlier that while doing BIOS update I also updatet few chipset drivers. So the solution was to go back to Forceware 77.77 and also to install Uli 2.13 chipset drivers.
Are u sure u did the above step with the same versions of the drivers as stated above. If so, then I don't know what else to do.
