Dead E-Machine

My 4 year old E-Machine just went belly up - can't get it to power up at all. Have changed out power plug, verified button/card connection and changed wall outlets. Nothing seems to happen except noticed that fan started to run and then dies after 2 seconds. If fan is not working - does that stop PC from powering up in some way?

If by fan you mean the heatsink then yes if the fan is not working the CPU automatically shuts down before it overheats. This is the case with pentium 4s and celerons and i am very sure that is the case with AMD's as well

It sounds more like a power supply or motherboard failure. Both are very common in older eMachines. Repair costs are so high you're better off replacing a machine that old.
