Disabling the Media Player Automatic Update
By Jim Pile

By default, Media Player 7.0 and later (and maybe earlier versions)
automatically checks for an update when you run the program. Reader
Alicia T. suggests a way to disable this automatic action.

"If you prefer to not have Media Player 7.0 and later automatically
update when you run it, you can stop this behavior with a simple
Registry edit. Since we use a number of computers at this location, we
decided to write a Reg file to do the job quickly without having to run
RegEdit on a dozen or so computers.

To generate the Reg file, run Notepad and enter the following as shown
here. Where you see PRESS ENTER HERE, press Enter. Do not type PRESS
ENTER HERE.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
PRESS ENTER HERE
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsMediaPlayer]
"DisableAutoUpdate"=dword:00000001
PRESS ENTER HERE

Choose File, Save As and name the file Media.reg (or whatever you wish)
and click Save. You can now double-click your new Reg file to merge it
with the Registry.

The next time you run Media Player 7 or greater, the auto update will
not occur."

Thanks for the tip, Alicia.
