DVD drive help

Ok. My problem is this.
I got this laptop less than a year ago for college. It's a Dell Inspiron 2200. It has a DVD/CD-R combo drive on it.
Well... Until recently, DVDs would play perfectly well. But now, when I put a DVD in and try to open it with PowerDVD or Windows Media, among other software.... It just spins, stops, spins, stops... And nothing will come up.
But it plays audio CDs and data CDs perfectly...
So I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem... If so, how did you solve it?

It's driving me insane since it's the only DVD player I can use without annoying my roommate. ARG!

Thanks much!

I suppose it depends on what BIOS you have but set it to cd rom even though the drive is a dvd drive.
