Electronic Arts might be one of the more controversial AAA video game publishers out there, but it's certainly not the least successful. Despite seeing a revenue dip earlier this year -- not unexpected for most games as time goes on -- Apex Legends continues to perform well for EA, as does the company's other "live service" games.

Apex Legends has managed to hit a whopping 70 million players "life to date," which is a pretty impressive figure, all things considered. Of course, the rate of growth for the popular first-person shooter/battle royale hybrid has slowed since launch -- in the game's first week, it pulled in 25 million players, and that number grew to 50 million by the end of its first month on the market.

Given that its surprise release took place back in February, the growth could be averaged out to around 2.8 million new users per month. That's not quite a Fortnite-level success, but it's respectable.

As we said before, Apex Legends isn't the only game that has strengthened EA's bottom line. According to a company financial report released today for Q2 FY2020, FIFA's Ultimate Team and The Sims 4 both performed above the publisher's expectations, with the latter seeing a monthly player-count boost of "more than 40%" year-over-year -- not bad for a life simulator.

EA says it plans to "[double] down" on live services moving forward, so players can undoubtedly expect to see a lot more content for the games mentioned above, as well as a few new titles down the line.

Of course, not all of EA's games are going to be live services. The publisher says it also looks forward to delivering "a lot of fun and excitement" to players this holiday season with games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. For the unaware, Fallen Order will be a purely-singleplayer, microtransaction-free sci-fi adventure set for launch on November 15.

Don't recall BFV doing so great. I know Chapter 5 is coming out but it's been a really rough go so far.

EA should use it's brain for once and stop following trends. Battle Royal won't last forever and doubling down on games as a service is not a good idea. Just like with micro-transactions EA is going to put way too many eggs into a single basket. For having a bunch of suits at the top they sure don't know how to diversify their portfolio.

Apex is a decent game but there's literally no reward for playing it especially after level 100. After reaching 100 you no longer get free loot boxes and you literally have to pay real money for everything after that. Also the rewards you get for free before level 100 are usually TRASH. You can buy new characters with in game currency.....but you get one of those every 3 months and they're underwhelming to begin with. Also the only thing left to unlock besides legends are skins.....skins in a first person shooter....that you can't even see while playing. You can see weapon skins but....who cares? The cash grab concept of this game is illogical at best.

So you complained about getting no free loot boxes after level 100 then proceeded to explain that loot boxes are crap anyway?

So what are you complaining about? It's a free game, since you pointed out that most of it is cosmetic and therefore pointless, does it matter you're not getting free loot boxes after level 100?

I enjoyed Apex Legends when it came out, played it a fair bit. Quick paced, well made and free. But if a game is free you won't catch me spending money on skins and the like. They make no difference to gameplay and I don't care if someone sees me in game with a default skin instead of one thats "epic" or "legendary".

The main reward in playing a Battle Royale game is winning, being the last man standing, outplaying your opponent. Oh and having fun playing a game with friends and working well together.

What game besides Apex Legends is popular from EA?
Sims 4, to name one. Which is a bit surprising, since it seems like such a niche title, and though it has DLCs and expansions, it is mostly free from the trappings of microtransactions. There's also the FIFA games, but I'm pretty sure those would be popular even if they were being made by an indie studio. Sports are sports, after all.

"lifetime players"

Some outlets are just saying "players," which I felt was a bit misleading, so I wanted to clarify. Doesn't sound as fancy, but oh well.

70 million lifetime players is still a lot, but it's definitely not anywhere near as impressive as 70 million active players. Apex is a great game (I like it a lot), but it still has a ways to go before it reaches Fortnite's level of success.

my point is what u earn for free is miniscule at best and everything is locked behind a paywall and is mainly pointless regardless. You don't get anything "cool" for free. I don't care that the game is free. Most free games suck for a multitude of reasons.

So everything you get for free sucks AND everything you get with real money sucks? On a free to play game? Do you not play for fun then? You only play to be drip fed "rewards"?
