Epson Perfection 2580 problems

Please help me if you can. I have installed an epson perfection 2580 it worked 1 time. After that point it gives an error message that it cannot communicate with scanner and then gives me a fatal error screen and restars the computer. In addition when you are not even doing anything (scanning) etc the scanners light will flash and then it makes some horrendous noise like it is trying to scan but something is wrong. It is like the scanner will not go into sleep mode it is constantly on and trying to scan when there is nothing there. Even if I unplug the scanner it will give a fatal error. I have downloaded patches from epson and even those don't work. Has anyone come across this problem out there. Thanks for your help. :giddy:
