Error Booting WinXP from External USB Enclosure

I recently bought a new laptop which I intended to use as a desktop replacement, so I could devote my other box to being a media center pc. I had a drive set up to dual boot XPSP2/Win Server 2k3 which has always worked fine on that box, and because I've had that drive for a while and have everything set up the way I like it to work from that drive, I decide to buy an enclosure for it so I can just hook it up to the laptop and boot from that drive when I need to.

I hooked it up, set my BIOS to boot from an external USB drive first, and everything appeared to be going fine. It started to boot from that drive- getting past the boot loader screen (i'm not sure if that's what it's called- the screen that lets me select which of my OSs I want to boot from), I selected XP, and the xp loading screen was displayed. After a few seconds though, I got that generic "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" message...no other useful error info was provided...

If it got that far, I'm assuming it's not a problem with my laptop or enclosure not being able to boot an OS through USB, and that drive has never given me any problems, so I'm not really sure where to start... Here are the specifics-

I was reeeally close to getting the perfect setup I wanted... Any information that might lead me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks!

oh- one more thing to note- I got the same problem trying to boot server 2k3 as well.

Hi

From what I can gather, you had a dual OS system set up on a PC and thought that if you stick it in a USB enclosure and stick it on the laptop that it would boot ....

Ok so heres the reason why it wont.

XP 2K and NT are hardware specific, that is, it will only load on the hardware it was installed on..you cant transplant a drive from one machine to another and expect it to boot, unless the hardware is identical....

So if that's the case , then your stuffed, you will need to reinstall the OS's on the new laptop, there is talk that doing repair installs or over the top installs or similar would work, but I have never had any luck getting an NT based product to change hardware and make it stable.

Regards

Windows cannot boot from USB devices out of the box, it's a design "feature".
