Explorer crashing due to videos?

On occasion, my friends Explorer will crash randomly while uploading/opening videos. She's been having the problem for a while now, and it's mainly an on-off issue with the uploading, but reoccuring problem for opening the videos. She tries tons of different players (Winamp, WMP, DivX, etc.), and aside from DivX (which starts and stops the video before it plays), it provides the same results.

Also, with the uploading, it also happens with other files. When she's at a Browse window, selecting files or folders sometimes ends up crashing Explorer.

For the videos crashing, could it be a possible codec issue? Any help/info would be good. TYIA.

I had a similar problem that was solved by turning off thumbnails in the folders view (e.g. use the list view)

Google for "free codec pack" will help with playing the videos but detrunks idea is more likely to stop explorer crashing.

A more selective way to turn off thumbnails -

Go to Start/Run/and type - regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll click OK.

These things will especialy happen with badly encoded video files..

Try using ExplorerXP (google for it). It doesnt do thumbnails and it won't crash like explorer does..
