Explorer.exe - Application Error, when I boot up my computer.

Please help! I’ve got a PC with Windows XP Home edition Service Pack 1. Often (not always) when I boot up I get this error message:

"Explorer.exe- application error”
The instruction at "0x77f585c0" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

"Explorer.exe- application error”
The instruction at "0x1a416d01" referenced memory at "0xff000004". The memory could not be "read".

Or various other messages (these are just two that I’ve noted down)

It then takes anything up to 10 attempts to load the PC up, sometimes it works first time. I have been told that Windows XP edition 1 has had a lot of problems, could this be the cause? I have just received Service Pack 2 from Microsoft, but am unsure to whether it would make any difference if I installed this. Any help would be much appreciated, Many thanks.
