External Maxtor OneTouch II 200G corrupted - How to recover the data?

I just transfered some data from Maxtor OneTouch II to my computer, but suddenly it stopped and showed raw datas. Then I restart the windows XP and tried to fix it when it booted up (it said that some of the files and chain files are truncated - I don't understand what that means to my data  ) . So now, the external drive no longer show raw datas but a folder named found.000 filled with thousands of "chk" files and a file named &2&2.

I then tried the latest Powermax from Maxtor, but it turned out that Powermax doesn't detect external harddrive (Mine is USB2.0). So no luck there?

Is there anyway to recover the data back? Or am I pretty much out of luck and have to reformat the HD :( ?

Those check files can be opened in Notepad. Although as it is in fragments you only find some pieces of readable text. All this can be cut and pasted, but a laborious job. It could be transfered to desktop (if you have one) to run Powermax to see if that would have more success.
