SAN JOSE, Calif. –– Federal investigators have launched a criminal antitrust investigation of the $12 billion computer memory chip industry, issuing subpoenas to at least four of the world's largest firms.

Details of exactly what was under suspicion and who is being probed were not released, leaving many observers wondering whether there is a valid reason for such a probe.

Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of dynamic random access memory chips, Germany's Infineon Technologies AG, Hynix Semiconductor Inc. of Korea and Idaho's Micron Technology Inc. confirmed that they received subpoenas earlier this week.

Shares of technology company Rambus Inc. skidded more than 20 percent on Wednesday after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said it filed an antitrust complaint against technology company Rambus Inc. , charging the firm with improperly patenting key computer chip technologies.

The agency charged that Rambus had participated for more than four years in an industry standard-setting group without disclosing it had a patent and several pending patent applications for specific technologies ultimately adopted by the group.
