Flat monitors

Okay.. just got a samsung 19" monitor.
Pictures look great in the picture viewing program but they come out all dark when I open thrm from photoshop. What's wrong???

Does your samsung monitor comes with a colour management program? Some monitors do come with them like two of my Philips 17". Have you installed them? Try fiddling around with the settings or disabled them and check if the problem still occurs in photoshop.

damn flat panals only reach 1200x1000 rez, with only a few pricey exceptions.......so probably some video driver issue

There may be kodak colormatching software(CMS)(see also ICC Color Profiles) for your monitor and printer drivers and photoshop , and also some but not all photo software has a gamma adjustment preference for adjusting how bright a picture appears on your screen. Haven't used photoshop in about 5 years so I can't remember what options were in prefs then and have no idea what's available in the later versions.
