Gaming resolution and widescreen

Guys,

1. what resolution do you game at?
2. Is this res. determined by your gfx card, or did you determine your gfx card according to the res. you WANTED to game at?
3. Do most new games accommodate widscreen resolutions without the need for patching?

My graphics card is capable of supporting a much higher resolution than my monitor.
I run the native resolution of my 17" LCD, which is 1280x1024. This is the optimal resolution for my monitor and looks the best.
However, as newer games come out I'm forced to bring it down below the native resolution and decreasing visual quality.
