 Hi, i am having trouble with my graphics card, i have a Gforce 4200 ti. I was having the blue screen of death telling me Bad_pool_caller :bounce: which I thought was driver problems, then the Bsod told me that there was an error in the Pf list,, so i am having a really bad headache, programs are running slow, ownloaded the Nforce2 ATA controller to work for the Graphics driver ( bare in mind that I know hardley anything about computers), i don't know what to do? :knock:

ummm

   minidumps.........whaaaa, um how can i get that information?, i'm running windows xp to let u know, :knock:

Well if you have no minidumps, that is odd.

Right-click My Computer and choose Properties. Then Advanced tab. Then Settings button under Startup And Recovery. If you look down low you'll see "Write Debugging Information". Make sure that drop down box is set to Small Memory Dump. You can also see what path it is storing the files in, in the next box down.
Make sure Automatic Restart is OFF. So you can see the error when it happens.

Otherwise, check your error logs.
Right click My Computer and choose Manage. Then Event Viewer. Under both Application and System, tell us all the info about the most recent errors. Errors are marked with a red X. The Source, Category, event ID, description etc...
Maybe those errors will help us.

hmm error logs

I downloaded system mechanic 6 p0rofessional, ran it, only one problem could not be fixed, it was an Active x file (can't remember which one!!? ... :knock: ), also defragged the computer, nothing else I can do (only because i don't know how to!!.... :p ), any help would reallllyyyy be appreciated, thanks!!

From my perspective. It really is a case of waiting untill you have some minidumps to post.

In the meantime, I suggest you test your ram/hard drive/page file etc.

Go to the link Vigilante and I gave you and follow the instructions.

Regards Howard :)

already did, no problems i could find, need other options, the only info i got i posted earlier, i hate computers  , but love them the same time  , but the problems i am having are two main ones, the Bsod and the application closure.

there have been no minidumps so far, so cannot post any, sos, but thanks in advance for any ideas

I'll toss some ideas at you.

Clear your swap file and do a defrag.

Make sure all the drivers are up to date, especially motherboard drivers.

Do all your Windows updates and patches.

Run updated scans with programs such as Ad-aware, Spybot search and destroy, crap cleaner, and other favorite tools you find on this site. Perhaps even a registry cleaner like JV16 power tools or Regsupreme.

Run a virus scan with housecall.trendmicro.com.

Uninstall any unneeded programs from control panel add/remove programs. This would be any toolbars, search bars, calendar/weather apps, desktop enhancements, screensavers, anything with save or coupon in the name. And so forth.

Run system file checker. Click Start-Run and type SFC /scannow. You will need your XP CD handy for this, and it could take some time to run all the way through.

Look for patches specifically for the programs you are using when it crashes. Game patches, office programs, financial programs etc... do those updates.

Clean those error logs after all this, the clear option is in the right-click menu of the log category. So you can get some fresh readings.

If you have compression turned on, turn it off. Go into My Computer, right click your operating system drive (usually C:) and choose Properties. Make sure "Compress drive to save disk space" is UNchecked and if it is then uncheck it and say YES to to apply to all subfolders. If this option was on, this may take a long time to finish removing compression.
You might also turn off encryption if it's on. And turn off hiding of your files. These options are also in there and in control panel.

Take unnecessary programs out of startup. Firstly do this from the program itself, go into their options area and set NOT to be in startup, for any programs you have running. Then clear them out manually with a program like Hijackthis, startups are the "04" category, remove any that are obvious to you that you don't need in startup.
-----------------------

That aught to keep you busy for a little while. This was in no particular order. But once you have done all the "removing" you're going to do, that would be a good time to turn the swap file off and defrag. Then turn it back on. Set the swap file to manual size and put whatever size is needed so that your system has 2gb of RAM. For example, if you have 512 of ram, set the swap to 1536. If you have a gig of RAM, set the swap to 1024. Set this value for min and max, then hit the "set" button.

If you recently had any bugs or spyware or viruses removed, it would be a good idea to clear your system restore data as well. Right click my computer, choose system restore tab and check the "turn off..." box. Apply...wait...turn back on...then it would be a good idea to set the restore SIZE slider to something between 2gb and 3gb. I personally don't like seeing monstrous restore settings, lots of wasted space. I don't even use system restore.

-------------------

Now then, if you do ALL that and still have trouble. Repost the new errors, and if you had a BSOD, you should have a minidump if the settings are right.

Hope that helps.
