Half-Life 2 Locks up and produces a high pitched whine

  1. Okay, I'm getting a rather annoying error out of Half-Life 2 and getting very little feedback from my system.

It happens at random, sometimes it'll take only a few minutes to happen, others it wont happen at all. The game will lock up and no commands will be accepted (nothing from the keyboard nor the mouse) and the only way to recover is to restart the system.

All my drivers are the most up to date drivers, nothing is overclocked. What's going on?

    AMD Athalon 2700+
    1 GB Ram
    Asus A7N8X-X
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
    Soundblaster Audigy 2

Going back to 4.10 fixed it. 4.12 didnt cause any problems but I upgraded to 5.1 and the screeching and locking up came back. So Im back at 4.12. Guess I'll stick with that one.

Update your chipset and soundcard drivers. See if that helps.
