HD enclosue causing drive failure????

I recently purchased a hard drive enclosure. The thing is great for making backing up images. One thing I have noticed is that 2 drives that I used with it no longer function and a third has gotten louder (whine) since using it in the enclosure. Now these drives were not new, but is it possible that the enclosure is speeding up or causing their failure?
