Heatsink Problems

  1. I have been reading posts on computers shutdown out of the blue. I recently got my computer back from my parents (they bought a new one). They were complaining that the computer would just shutdown without warning. I opened the case to check the power supply as the fan in not running, which I thought was the problem. I installed the power supply in a different computer and it ran fine with out shutting down.

While I was install the power supply I plug the main power connector back in to the mobo and I heard a click, but disregarded it since I did not see anything loose. After I got everything hook up I set the computer upright and the heat sink feel off. The F@@#king tab that holds the heatsink on snapped right off. i have reattached the heat sink but I is attached to the tabs on the side.

Is there a heat sink that attaches differently so I can put the heat sink back in the center where it belongs I am sure that will cure the problem i am having.

The motherboard needs to be replaced. You put too much pressure on the CPU socket

I was afraid someone would say that. I have been leaning in that direction. Thanks
