i recently tried to put a new 160gb hard drive in my old computer which had just been reformatted and when i tried installing windows 98 again (as i cant seem to install xp from dos) i was propted to create a partion on my new hard disk, so i then created a primary partition under fdisk but when i try to install windows my computer now freezes straight away after it had checked my drives through scandisk. I then tried messing about and creating partitions on my old computer to find out what i had done and the same thing happened after i had wiped and then created new partitions! Can anyboody help?

First, find out what is the maximum size of hard disk your old computer supports. Do a BIOS update to improve matters.

Newer hard drives come with a jumper setting to limit the drive size to 32GB.

You should not create partitions bigger than 32GB for Win98 since it just doesn't support them.
