HELP: SONY HI8 CAMCORDER to DVD BURNING PROBLEMS

I just bought a Sony DRX-720UL DVD burner and am trying to convert my Sony Camcorder 8mm recordings to DVD. I have a Sony VAIO laptop running at 1.7ghz. When I capture the video from Camcorder, it captures all choppy and not clear as when I'm just viewing it. I'm using the NERO express software that come with the DVD burner. Why is the capture and video I burn to DVD so choppy? Do I need a faster computer?

How much RAM is in that laptop ? ?
Video capture/editing is very memory intensive...

There is 1ghz ram on the laptop. I make sure nothing is running in background when I do the capture as well. Could it be the video card? THis is a very small, lighweight laptop..
