Hey buddy - there are other places you can go for stuff like that. We can't really give you a cd key - thats nearly straight out piracy. I'm sure there are places on the net other than here where you can look for a key.
If you really have a cd key and it no longer works others might be able to give some suggestions on making it work.

You have to edit [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Half-Life\Settings\Key] & put in the new one.

Sometimes the key you have in your original game is already in use. Information on what to do is in the readme file.
Polite version of "RTFM" ;)

Methinks what this chap is going through is that SOMEONE (looks at Didou :suspiciou ) has used a keygen and gotten your key! And is using it! Man...that sucks. Do what Didou said...

And if you dont know what that is, go to the start menu->run-> and type "regedit" there should be HKEY_CURRENT_USER there, just follow the path until you find it.

It really sucks when someone gets a hold of your key. I have a friend working in an electronic shop which happens to sell Games too.

They've had a few cases of kids coming in & opening the Half-Life boxes just to write down the CD key. It's happened to me allready that I get the message "Your CD Key is allready in use" when trying to connect to a server.

I don't really play HL that much ( including CS ) so it's not really a problem but I can understand how that could get on people's nerves.

I mean the Collector "Game of the Year" edition of half-life is around 5$ or something. Is it really that much to ask, that they buy the damn thing ?

so let me get this straight are you needing a key? or to know how to change the key? there is a program (which i can get the link) which allows you to do this with ease. tell me if you need it.

The cd key can be changed :-

via the registry
using a program written for the purpose (sorry can't remember the name)
Reinstalling HL :)

Yeah...But companies right now I'm sure companies are taking steps to eliminate this problem. Thus with Windows XP's strict registering deal...I don't blame the companies for actually wanting people to buy their software, however...
On and on the battle of pirate and game designer rages on. The question is...What have we lost from this? Perhaps companies are starting to shift more resources toward anti-pirating research instead of the actual game itself. What has the world become...

Game companies don't develop in house CD Protection, they generally license 3rd party technology like Safedisc but I'm sure the license fees are taken into account in the game's selling price.

More & more game companies are moving to the console market where there is a much bigger sales potential even if piracy also exists there. Blockbuster games on PCs rarely go beyond 2 million copies while cosoles can reach that amount for an average game.

From what I've seen so far, anti-piracy usually just means a huge headache for the consumer. It makes the guys who are trying to "crack" the protection work a little harder to do so but it makes the consumer have to jump through hoops to prove he has a legit copy. I have several times tried to play a game and gotten the "key already in use" msg which is annoying but the thing that burnt me up was when I upgraded Poser 4 to the ProPack. When it tried to validate serial# it gave me an error and sent me to a page that gave a lecture about piracy and its evils. I had to send Curious Labs a copy of the invoice where I purchased it. They issued me another serial# but it was a pain and wasted two weeks of my time.

They've moved to Steam as time passed by. HL shipped with the WON cd-key system at first.

I have no idea what Steam is like but most I hear about is complaints. It's also believed that a part of the Steam source code was amongst what was stolen from Valve last year.

Hello and welcome to to Techspot.

If you`ve lost the key or it`s saying the key is already in use and your game is legit. Contact the game manufacturers, they may be able to help you.

If the game isn`t legit, you`ll get no help here.
