Help! Windows XP going slow for unknown reasons

Status
Not open for further replies.
My computer just started lagging for reasons unknown. I've defragged, scanned for viruses and spyware, cleaned the registry, and done probably every other thing I could think of. It's taking 40 sec to boot now and even playing MP3s causes it to slow down. Surfing the net and browsing files through Explorer seem to cause no problems however. I noticed a post from someone about a year ago that had a similar problem, but there was no real solutions that were posted.

Please help me! If no one can help, I'm gonna end up formatting my drive.

Don't format your drive just yet, because there is nothing to say it won't come back after you reinstall. Be patient for a little bit more and wait to see if someone can give you a better solution.

any recent upgrades or updates?
Do a search for HijackThis(its been linked to in many previous threads), download it and run it, then copy/paste the log here. It not only helps to identify spyware and such, but also tells every service running, one of which might be the root of your problem

Hi guys

I think I have a few clues,at least.
By the way,I had to reboot half way through the first reply-attempt,as my puter hung.

Your problem will get worse.
When you reboot,it is fine.
after a few hours, the cursor moves slow, and new windows take long to open.
Eventually the pc will hang.

My research has led me to csrss.exe ,which,Just before the pc hangs ,is using 20% cpu.
Iexplore is also using 45% cpu just before hang.
Normally, these processes use nearen no cpu.

I do not believe it is a virus, just crappy old microsoft software, that does not work properly.

There was one article on ms site regarding csrss.exe , but they were referring to winnt , not xp.

I am also contemplating a format and fresh install, but jeesh, all that data!!!

Good luck
Raticus

Hmmm....
Theres a couple of things I would recommend to sort out. Firstly, the most likely reason for this sudden slowdown is going to be ad-ware intruding with your pc, what program have you used to check if you have any viruses/ad-ware and spyware? Has your homepage been hi-jacked, and are you being sent to random sites? Check Windows update aswell, that might hold some answers. I see in the logg you have Norton Antivirus installed, Uninstall IT Trust me, it tracks nothing, slows down your pc dramatically, and can't detect a single thing. If it's that, that was used to check your pc then that's your answer to why none were found. I recommend downloading Ad-Aware from http://www.ad-aware.com, and then check your entire PC. Also, go to PC Pitstop here http://www.pcpitstop.com, and do a checkup. Also uninstall MSN Plus, that's a very likely cause for intrusion.
Good Luck...
