Why it matters: Bad news for those people waiting for the first Homeworld title in over two decades: the highly anticipated Homeworld 3 has been delayed to February 2024. This is the latest delay the game has suffered, but hopefully it will be the last.

Homeworld 3, one of our most anticipated upcoming PC games, was due to arrive in the first half of 2023. Now, developer Blackbird Interactive has announced that the space opera RTS is being pushed back to February next year.

Blackbird said that it intends to deliver a Homeworld game that lives up to the standards set by its beloved predecessors. It added that in order to fulfill that vision, more time is needed to refine and polish the game.

"We deeply appreciate your passion and dedication to this game, and we are working hard to get Homeworld 3 to you as soon as we can," wrote the dev.

In a Q&A on its announcement page, Publisher Gearbox writes that it doesn't want to rush the game out at the cost of its quality. There's also a question about whether the delay could be attributed to Blackbird moving to a four-day work week. Gearbox says this isn't the case and that the team can achieve as much, if not more, with this work setup, thanks to the additional personal time.

Gearbox first unveiled Homeworld 3 in August 2019. By September, its Kickstarter had raised $1.5 million. There was a Q4 2022 launch window announced at the end of 2021, but that changed to the first half of 2023. There were only a few days left before that period passed, hence the confirmation of another delay.

Blackbird was founded by the first Homeworld art director, Rob Cunningham. It was also responsible for the Homeworld Remastered Collection, so fans should expect plenty of what made those first games so great: controlling and fighting multiple ships in 3D space while humming along to some fantastic music. The third entry also features a roguelike cooperative mode.

We've seen several big games delayed this year, including Starfield, Skull & Bones, and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

The only wish I have on this release is to provide more natural fleets orientation. It was really breaking the immersion to jump to middle of nowhere and see my fleet and enemy fleet always operate on the same plane. It's, like, it is 3d universe, how th all ships align to the same top and bottom?
Anyway, hope this delay is needed and will result in better product.

I'm guessing Gearbox implemented a Working From Home policy. It may be an inconvenient truth to a lot of people, but every software company I've talked to that has moved to remote working (most) has seen a significant reduction in productivity over time.
