How I finally beat the scalpers and landed a PS5 (Update)

I've scored on Walmart. They've had a direct add to cart link that helped me get a PS5 in my cart. Instead of browsing to the page and clicking add to cart, this link would just automatically attempt to add it to your cart. It still took a few tries and I still feel I got relatively lucky on Walmart and I don't recommended it. I ordered Walmart 2 weeks ago, no cancellation and still not shipped with an estimated delivery date of April 13th.

But I've also been doing Playstation Direct shop randomizer queue. If you find a discord or something that regularly sends stock notifications, you generally get notification about 20 minutes in advance before the PS Direct randomizer queue starts. Everyone in waiting is then assigned a spot in line and if you get admitted into the store within 20-30 minutes, you generally have a decent chance of making it in time. Shortly after getting my Walmart, I finally won the PS Direct randomizer queue. Free 2 day shipping for Playstation Plus members. And unlike Walmart, when Sony says they have consoles, they have consoles and are ready to ship them. They aren't selling promised stock that hasn't come in yet. I won the PS Direct queue on Wednesday evening. I unboxed my PS5 Friday night. Legit 2 days from cart to doorstep. Thats the way to go. And its not bundled, its just the console. I've already got coworkers willing to take my Walmart PS5 at cost. I'll have no problem getting the other PS5 resold.

Antonline, Costco, Gamestop have massive bundles that are meant to deter anyone scalping. I'm not sure it does. It adds extra hassle to scalping and I bought my first ps5 game before I bought my first PS5, but it was hard to resist an Ultimate edition Miles Morales PS5(includes the remaster) for $40. I got it cheap because people who don't want the game and just want the console have saturated the market. Making these bundled games that sell for 60-70 retail to be 40-50 as sealed secondhand copies. I plan on trying to get a cheap second controller probably. A lot of bundles include an extra controller and scalpers are selling those at a slight loss after selling the console for scalper prices.

I'd say the 2nd best option is Best Buy. Best Buy has been dropping on a Friday lately. They have an automated add to cart button. You click it, wait for it to say you can actually add it to your cart, then you select a pickup location. They will legit have the console ready for pickup within a week. For giggles, I did Best Buy yesterday afternoon. I had a console in my cart and an available pickup location about 10 miles away. I could've totally bought a 3rd. But I'm not really looking to scalp. I've already burned away most of my soul and I don't have much left to burn off. Soon I'll be a completely soulless individual, so I got to protect what's left.

Edit: For reference, it may not be the best, and it may not be the least toxic community, but I've been using this discord for my notifications: https://discord.gg/kTyfPCNe

Antonline is ok; got my X1X from them a few years back. Can't speak for Cosco, but Gamestop is NOT doing those bundles to help anyone except ****ing Gamestop. They've always done the same thing. It's a cash grab from a terrible company on the verge of going under. Stick with more reputable stores. I got both my SX and PS5 from Amazon. This whole hammering sites every day thing instead of just taking backorders and filling them as they get more stock is stupid as all hell.

p.s. I wish everyone would stop buying extra PS5 controllers until the cnts release more colors. Piss on those white things.

Filled with hope after reading this artical, I checked out HotStock, only to be disappointed to find that it does not provide any useful service to Australians. Just wondering if such a service is available for Australians and Australian stores? Unfortunately, many US retailers do not ship to Australia, which means that Aussies have to resort to mail forwarding services, causing additional problems with warranty and RMA claims. Any Aussie who considered buy a Valve Index VR knows what I'm talking about.

I hope you actually GET your PS5.... What would suck is to receive an email next week saying "We had to cancel your purchase as we ran our of stock"...

I have a far better strategy of course... I'm going to wait a couple of years....

.... Right before the PS6 drops then 😂

I still feel that these kinds sales should be click and collect only.

And then just limit each sale to one or two per customer.

Imagine playing Skyrim and only having to wait a few seconds between transitions.
I can imagine that pretty well, because the moment I put Oldrim on an SSD load times are pretty much instant, and this isn't with some $3000 Threadcrusher rig with PCI 4 NVMEs, this is my humble, janky-*** i9-9900 with SSDs on bog-standard SATA. And I think Oldrim is aged enough at this point that you could run it off integrated graphics, even.

For sure. I'm pretty sure contemporary IG can handle it capably now.

I have a couple of Aussie forum mates over at UG. We've compared prices on guitar stuff and the like. A set of ordinary PB 12 string lights that go for 8 bucks here, are 24 in the ANZAC world..

After seeing some of the prices down under, I'm mystified as to why we don't have Australians at our border asking for asylum, instead of Mexicans.

We are spoiled up here though. Unless something is labeled "free shipping".. I'm liable to consider only buying it as a last resort.

It's not all bad, though. Playing my PS4 library on the PS5 is a joy. Load times are incredible. Imagine playing Skyrim and only having to wait a few seconds between transitions. Very nice. No Man's Sky (PS5 version) looks spectacular, and the game starts almost as soon as the title screen fades out instead of flying you through space for over a minute while the assets load. Fallout 4 is—well—Fallout 4.

How are the load times for Fallout 4 on PS5? Even running from SSD on a good gaming PC, they tend to be painfully long.

Either hotstocks is horrible or there hasn’t been on stock in over a month. I used to get notifications and now I get nothing. I’m also paying the monthly fee. Not sure what’s going on. I have all notifications on and have tested it too. So either the stuff I’m supposed to get notified on truly hasn’t been in stock for over a month or the app is a total scam

Hmm they seem faster. I'll see if I can grab some video tonight and post it hear tomorrow so you can compare yourself.

Hard to say. It seems a bit shorter than FO4 title screen to ingame on my PC, but what really annoys me is the loading times when entering and leaving dungeons. These feel a lot longer than they should be.
FO4? I thought we were comparing Skyrim. lol They both suck in the load time department, but Skyrim's load times always seemed longer to me... Maybe not. I never actually timed them. I can post a clip entering a dungeon though. Also maybe a clip of one of FO4's transition screens too.

I don't think either fully benefits from the PS5's storage architecture because they have not been optimized for it. I do think they load a little bit faster though for the sole factor that it is an SSD/HDD comparison (for me). No Man's Sky load times are drastically improved though. But that's because HG did a full PS5 port that takes full advantage of the new storage system. I'll also post clips of its title screen load for PS4 and PS5 so you can see just how much improved it really is.

IT TOTALLY WAS. My wife even said she was willing to pay more, but I said no. During the whole process I was chatting with fellow TS writer Shawn Knight in between sales. At one point he said something like, "I'm surprised you're still trying."

I had already been very close to closing a deal a couple times at that point and I told him that I was having that feeling you get when you are playing a really hard level of a video game. You know where you keep saying, "Okay. Just one more time and then I'll quit." But then one more time turns into, "Okay. Okay. That time I screwed up. That was my fault. Just one more shot." And one more shot turns into, "OH MAN! I ALMOST HAD IT! One more time. One more time."

That's totally what it was like. It took 18 lives to beat the bots. LOL
So basically like addiction.. cool
