Title says it -

I want to make my default view LIST instead of icons.

Thanks

Have looked in control panel, display, don't see it.

Both - my 98SE would list the folders first,
then the individual files in either a drive or
a folder.

XP defaults to small icons in both.

I looked but must not be looking in
the right place to change the default
to LIST.

Thanks!

must open My Computer, then click view menu at the top, then select list

repeat this for all folders, they should remain this way. or according to Windows help
Open a folder and select a folder view. (list for you, then leave highlighted)
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, click Apply to All Folders.

You need to go to any folder, and inside that folder, right click, and set the view you want all your folders to be(list). then in that same folder, on the toolbar, click tools<Folder Options<View<Folder Views. Select Apply to all folder views.

Click OK. Now all the folders will be set to the current folder options.

Note: If you can't see the tools tab, then it will be hidden behind either the address bar, or something else, there should be two arrows facing right straight after the words "File" click this to get the drop down list of commands where the "tools" tab should be located.
