press the "Print Scrn" button on your keyboard. the key should be to the left of "F12." then open an image editor and paste.

just in case you are wondering, ALT + Print Scrn will only copy the active window you have open instead of the whole screen.
 
Its actually to the right of F12 BrownPaper :)

But yes everything else you said was correct.

A great image program to have is Irfanview, its free, small (fits on a floppy), opens fast, and opens nearly any image file you can imagine, and its really easy to paste screenshots into and crop and such. (www.irfanview.com)
