Hp nx9005 laptop problem with screen brightness

I recently bought a recondishioned hp laptop.

The one small niggle I have with it is that the screen seems slightly dull.
I have noticed that if you increase the brightness using the keyboard toggle, it always resets to a low brightness when you restart it.

I am just wondering does anyone know if this is normal, if there is a way to store the brightness setting or any other info? As I am planning to sell the laptop, but dont want to sell it until I know it is ok.

Not sure about your make of laptop but I have a Dell Latitude and in the BIOS is a screen brightness setting.
