I/O device error

Hey,
My friend bought a new DVD drive, sometimes when he trys to copy or open he gets this msg: Can't open/copy because of error in I/O device..
he tried it on another PC and it worked fine...
His PC spec is:
Intel P3
Ram: 320 MB

What type of DVD drive internal (inside) external outside?
If inside did you two hook it up right? Change it from pin CS to Slave or Master? Connect th power. Did you have a DVD player in there prior (means before) That would be either master or slave? You need to check that. That's why it didn't work? If you had a CDRW same thing. If not then the drive could be faulty.
