IE6 uses 100% cpu

I'm getting a really strange problem with IE6. It might also be related to explorer.exe, but I don't know. Whenever I turn on my computer, the amount of page faults for Explorer.exe jumps right up to around 4 1/2 million within a few seconds, and uses up to about 50,000K of memory. The main problem however, starts when I open Internet Explorer. It seems fine at first, but as soon as I try to go to any site, the cpu use goes straight to 100%, and nothing happens. If I leave it for about 2-3 minutes, it usually goes to the site I requested, but the cpu use still stays very high. Strangely, if I open IE through a shortcut made to a website on the desktop, or follow a link in, say, a word document, it works fine. I can also browse the internet from a normal folder with absolutely no problems.

I'm running Windows XP with Service Pack 2

Anyone got any ideas?
