Interpreting Task Manager display

Whenever I look at Task Manager's Performance tab, the CPU usage comes in two colors, red and green. I have always wondered what each color indicates. I would appreciate some enlightenment on this.

Red shows the CPU time spent in the system kernel. You can enable/disable this in View->Show Kernel Times

Thank you. Now all I have to do is research what exactly the kernel does. I can probably find that information somewhere on this site.
