Is it really worth the Upgrade? (Video Cards and RAM)

I bought a Dell computer off the shelf about a year ago and already its struggling with games such as Half Life 2, Doom 3 etc. I feel tempted to just build a computer from scratch with the best stuff but unfortunatly Im still paying for this computer :stickout:

my question is, what would be the best purchase for me right now to bring my computer back to scratch and play all these games like their meant to be played. Im torn between getting some new RAM or a Video Card, maybe both. Any suggestions are welcome.

here are the specs:
P4 2.66ghz
256 RAM (PC800 or PC1066 RDRAM non-ECC)
128mb ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (AGP 4x)
80gb HD

RAM. Add at least 512 MB of it. Other components are fine (unless you're using a PC beeper instead of a soundcard).
