hi all. quick question.

i have a dell inspiron 8600. hard drive just died, and was looking around to get one. the interface for most of the drives i saw were either sata or ata-6. i'm pretty sure i don't have an sata drive, but i was wondering if ata-6 is synonymous with ide/pata?

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks.
daniel.

You could get an adapter

ATA-6-P/Ata

We are you looking anyways??

If you live in America newegg.com offeres the best deals around with outstanding shipping.

hi! thanks so much for the reply.

yeah. i was looking in newegg. all the drives i saw had a sata or ata-6 interface, none had ide stated as an interface.

so i guess ata-6 and ide/pata is not synonymous?

i can put an adapter in the notebook? i was looking at the hitachi travelstar 5K100 80gb. i'd have to get an adapter to put in the dell notebook?

thanks for the response.
daniel.

IDE (Parallel ATA) was the old standered for desktops. The currnet standered interface for harddrives is sata for destops.

Now since you're looking into notebook/laptops harddrives it would be ATA-6.

Give me a price budget and I will pick something out for you.

That's the same hdd as I got I love it. Had it for 2-3months wich I love best bet.

man, thanks for the help, crossfire.

budget is under 110.00.

i have a dell inspiron 8600.

i'm hoping for a 60-80gb drive, 5400rpm.

thanks again!

daniel.
