Joining partitions

Well 2 years ago I have separated my Harddisc in two partitions. Now 2 years after I want to join it again back. Some friends told me that I have to format my Laptop and there is a command that will format my laptop and join it by the same time. Before procedying to this task I need more information about it. Please help me. Thank you.
