In brief: The US Department of Justice and several state attorneys general are expected to file antitrust suits against Alphabet’s Google later this year. The Journal said states’ investigations have thus far focused on Google’s online advertising business. The DOJ is also looking at Google’s ad tech but is additionally said to be focusing on claims that the Mountain View-based company uses its search business to stifle competition.

Sources familiar with the matter tell The Wall Street Journal that the Justice Department could levy charges against Google as early as this summer. Additional lawsuits from state attorneys general including Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton could follow in the fall, others said.

It is unclear if states will file their own complains or simply join in on a federal case.

A spokesperson for Google told the Journal that they will continue to engage with the ongoing investigations led by the Justice Department and Attorney General Paxton and don’t have any updates or comments on speculation. “Our focus is firmly on providing services that help consumers, support thousands of businesses and enable increased choice and competition,” the spokesperson added.

Although all signs point to a case materializing, no final decisions have been made yet, sources said.

Should a federal case come to fruition, however, it could be among the most significant in US history, right up there with the government’s antitrust case against Microsoft in the late 90s.

As Google has grown the size and scope of its operations, critics have increasingly called for the company to be broken up. Just last year, for example, Senator Elizabeth Warren said during her presidential campaign that tech giants like Amazon, Facebook and Google should be broken up because they have too much power over the economy, society and democracy.

The US Federal Trade Commission looked into Google’s practices nearly a decade ago but ultimately didn’t bring charges against the search giant.

Still kind of hazy over the logic of “You’re too big and successful - we’re going to break you up” logic.

Isn’t that kind of the ultimate goal in a capitalist society?

In years past is was more clear, especially to those that suffered under the weight of such dominate companies. Both Google and Amazon are taking advantage of their size and creating a business environment that crushes competition rather than participate head to head. When any company gets so large that they can control the market by manipulation it puts all of us at a disadvantage and ultimately we are forced to do it one way only, paying whatever price they demand with few, if any options.

Force them to admit they are evil publicly, providing examples where and how. That is the very least those hypocrites ought to do.

I am struggling to think how I am worse off for Google's alleged monopoly on "advertising." I rarely see online ads (from them or anyone else), and I find use in a number of their free-to-me services.

I realize they are gathering some data about me (at least the kinds I can't block), but I'm not sure how I'd be better off by having lots of little companies collecting that data vs one big one. Not that there aren't a ton of little companies trying despite what these suits are alleging... just look at all the connections your browser makes on a typical page and/or the connections your tracker-blocker software blocked.

I used to use Peerblock religiously, and it was unreal how many requests your machine gets from so many thousands of different entities per day.

From what I understand, a main attribute to a healthy capitalist system is competition. A business having a monopoly (where they can force out competition) allows abuse against consumers (since no other companies can compete to bring down prices).

Good Google controls the search engine, and the adds, they can prioritize traffic to AdSense websites and hide or suppress traffic to non addsese sites. They also control the majority of email these days.

I say do to Google what they did to ma Bell in the 50s, break it up, search engine, email, and advertising shouldn't all be controlled by just one company.

Absolutely. "Make rich richer" is the end result of capitalism, which is why we need regulation to temper it.
