Hi all

Newbie so please be gentle.

I have absolutely no networking experience at all, but have managed to set up a simple network connection between my pc and daughters laptop, so we can share files/internet.

Internet sharing working fine, but if I try to access one computer from another, I get the "ACCESS DENIED" message. This happens both ways (ie PC to laptop AND laptop to PC) :(

Very frustrated, please help!! :giddy:

Thanks in advance
Phil

first.. how are you trying to access the other computer... via My Network places.. or are you trying to do something like this...

Start>run> \\ipaddressOfcomputer\

how is your internet shared, is it via a broadband router?
have you went through the MS network setup wizard?
have you ever been able to access the other computer?

Hi,

Am tying to access pc;s though "view workgroup computers"

Cant see them anywhere else.

Internet connection is via a simple crossover cable.

Did the Network Setup Wizard, seemed to go fine got shaed internet straight away, but no access via pc;s to files/folders/drives, which are shared.

Thanks
Phil

well since this is via simple crossover cable 1st thing to look at.
what o/s is on both computers..

we know you are able to communicate to the other because the internet works.

1 question... you can see both computers when viewning your network in network places. correct?

hi,
nothing in my network places

laptop is XP home, my PC XP pro.

I cant access the internet on laptop with windows firewall on, so thats turned off.

Am using Kerio, but allowed access to internet through that ok.

I would try going through the network setup wizard again, especially if you do not know alot about networking.. otherwise i could walk you through manually configuring your ip/subnet information.

one other question. what kind of internet connection are you using.. i am assuming you are either using broadband via usb or second network card, or a dialup modem.

when you walk though the network wizard make sure your workgroups are set the same on both computers.

now lets try a couple things.

find the ip address on both computers."must be done on each computer"

1.> GOTO start>run type CMD hit enter...
2> from command prompt type "ipconfig /all"
what is the ip address for both computers?

after you have the ip address do this
1.>GOTO start>run type "\\ipaddress\" hit enter...
does it bring up an explorer window or error?

hi,
My ip address 192.168.0.1

Laptop 192.168.0.101

tied the run ip address command from my pc with laptops ip addess and got

"A SPECIFIED AUTHENTICATION PACKAGE IS UNKNOWN"?????????? :giddy:

ok. lets do this. eliminate your firewall, so disable it and try again.
IP scheme looks somewhat accurate. on the 192.168.0.101 have a default gateway of 192.168.0.1?

also what internet connection do you have?

HI,

USB modem to 1meg ADSL

IP config correct, 192.168.0.1, but still cant access anything with firewall disabled, other than internet

off to bed shortly, but if u around tomorow evening, will have another bash

Thanks mate :approve:
