LAN Connection in XP

My brother has a Toshiba laptop on which he was running Vista. He got a game that does not run on Vista, so he decided to dual-boot with Windows XP. He loaded XP onto his laptop with a disc that came with a Compaq. First question: Would the fact that the disc was for a Compaq have any effect on internet connectivity? He had tried to connect to the LAN at our house, and all it shows for network connections is a 1394 connection. How do we go about getting his computer to recognize the connection?

He needs to install drivers for the network card (and probably some other devices too.) They may be a Toshiba's web site. If not they could be found at the web site of who ever made the networking chip.
