LAN connection

Hi everyone
I'm trying to connect my laptop and my desktop using a Cat5 crossover cable, but it's still imposible for me. I connected the cable, but Windows does not recognize it. In other words, it's still says that:"A network cable is unplugged". Why is that happening if I'm using a crossover cable? And what can I do know to connect them? Please help.

Are both devices turned on and the network cards enabled? Are you sure it is a crossover cable? If the cable was made by hand then it may be a bad crimp or incorrect wiring.
