Have a HP Pavillion xh485-I have the AC adaptor plugged in along with battery in, after turning on laptop (OS/Win XP Pro) will be on for 10 mins or more and will power off battery lite is on but moving mouse around etc does nothing have to use power button to turn back on. Have reset power supply and was in process of formatting drive and reinstalling OS but won't stay on. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, brneyesga

Sounds like its Overheating

Unplug from mains while installing and remove it from flat surface...

make sure the vents on bottom are unobstucted

During install it runs hot because it runs cd/dvd and hdd at full speed and power usage making the whole thing hot and the protection cuts it off.

Thanks, - have thought about the heat problem have it setting on one of those things especially for laptops and it still turned off. Have it setting directly to where the fan is blowing directly into the cpu spot so far so good windows seems to be loading and it hasn't turned off yet (fingers crossed) could it possibly be anything else? Thanks again

No dont think so Have seen this a few times with those HP's and all but one time the overheating thing was the problem.

Another thing that causes this is as Circuit boards heat up, one or more of the tracks expand and break then as it cools down the tracks connect they connect again and machine works again till it heats up again.

If this happens then it is a serious problem and you would probably have to have a new MB.

But I'm sure yours is ok and it's just overheating due to processor running at 100% with mains power on.
