Latiency in 1000s on CS:s

So i have Cs:S installed on my computer and it runs fine when I create a server (obviously) but when I try and connect to other servers its unplayable my ping registers in the 900-1000 range

Specs

Sony Vaio VGN - A 290
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
Processor 1.700 GHz
1.69 GHz 1.00 GB of ram

I have satellite internet at 54.0 Mbps

I hope thats enough to help figure out the problem im not a computer person >.<

while you computer is no great shakes, latencies like that are caused by your internet connection. the only thing you can do, short of trying an alternate internet connection, is to minimize the latencies across your LAN (your computer's connection to the modem)
