Marvel and Square Enix took to Twitter on Wednesday, teasing fans that an “exciting announcement” was heading their way the next day.

The general consensus, based on the fact that Marvel is in the superhero business and Square Enix develops, publishes and distributes video games, was that a superhero-based game announcement was imminent.

The duo didn’t disappoint.

Marvel and Square Enix this afternoon announced a multi-year, multi-game licensing agreement to develop and publish new games based on Marvel’s various superheroes. The first title to come out of the partnership will be based on The Avengers franchise.

Drawing the assignment for this project is Crystal Dynamics (Rise of the Tomb Raider) and Eidos-Montréal (Deus Ex: Mankind Divided).

Beyond the announcement trailer, we’re told that the Avengers game will be loaded with all the characters, environments and iconic moments that fans have come to expect in a completely original story that’ll introduce a “universe gamers can play in for years to come.”

Jay Ong, Senior Vice President, Games & Innovation, Marvel Entertainment, said that by partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, they are working with two of the industry's most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways that fans have never experienced.

Over at Square Enix, CEO Phil Rogers noted that Marvel’s diverse, innovative universe has created millions of longtime fans, adding that the collaboration of passion and talent will craft epic, imaginative experiences that’ll allow gamers to live out their superhero dreams like never before.

Marvel and Square Enix promised more details in 2018 which unfortunately means that eager gamers have a long wait ahead of them.

A a “universe gamers can play in for years to come” implies an online-only game being continually updated. We already have Marvel Heroes, a glorified MOBA. Considering the talent employed we're probably looking at a platformer/rail shooter, but it *could* always be more ambitious than that. Dare we hope for a legitimate full-on, open world MMO ala City of Heroes, with the ability to make our own characters?
