What just happened? Google is being sued by Mexico over the tech giant's relabeling of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America for US Maps users, despite repeated requests from the country to revert the change. Google made the update in February following President Trump's proclamation that decreed the renaming and the subsequent name change by the federal Board on Geographic Names.

Trump signed the executive order changing the name of the body of water on his first day in office in January.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote a letter to Google soon after asking it to reconsider its decision to show the change on Google Maps. She shared a reply from Google VP of government affairs and public policy Cris Turner stating the company had no plans to change its policy. A month later, Sheinbaum threatened to take Google to court if it didn't rename the location.

Google says the name change on Maps is part of its long-standing policy of adhering to official government names for locations and other geographical features.

Although Google Maps users in the US now see the Gulf of America name, it appears as Gulf of Mexico to those in Mexico. The rest of the world sees both names on Google Maps.

Mexico argues that the policy violates Mexican sovereignty as the US has jurisdiction over around 46% of the Gulf, while Mexico controls 49% and Cuba controls 5%.

Sheinbaum said that Trump's executive order only applies to the portion of the continental shelf belonging to the United States.

"All we want is for the decree issued by the US government to be complied with," Sheinbaum said.

"The US government only calls the portion of the US continental shelf the Gulf of America, not the entire gulf, because it wouldn't have the authority to name the entire gulf," she added.

On Thursday, the US House of Representatives approved legislation to codify the policy of renaming the Gulf for Mexico. It makes the change official for federal agencies, which will be directed to update thier maps accordingly.

CBS News writes that Sheinbaum announced the lawsuit in her daily press briefing, but did not provide details of the suit.

When Trump first announced the renaming plans ahead of his inauguration, Sheinbaum remarked that Google should rename North America to América Mexicana, or Mexican America, because an 1814 founding document that preceded Mexico's constitution referred to it that way.

What does she assumes actually gives her any sort of authority here Google could cut Mexico off in 30 seconds and they'd lose less than 1% of their global revenue.

That's the end of the day Mexico has no legal right or grounds to sue Google over what the United States of America choose to call a body of water. Is she trying to hide from the whole world that she's taking constant bribes from the cartels that she has absolutely no real authority in Mexico.

I say teach this third world country lesson and just disconnect them from Google services for a week straight up Google should just block Mexico from accessing any services watch what little bit of the country is functional completely implode.

I'm in NL. In Google Maps I see "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)".
Nonsensical. What's next?
Renaming the Atlantic to Mar-a-Lago Ocean? I'd also suggest "Californian Ocean" on the West side but that won't happen:
California is a dissident state on the verge of seceding in Trump's eyes hahaha!

Btw if I'm not mistaken those in the US close to the Gulf just call it "the Gulf" so no difference there...

Officially naming it "The Gulf" would fix the problem entirely.

I live in the Gulf, we did call it the Gulf but now I like calling it the Gulf of America now I sounds nice.

For proper context, the president of Mexico is a criminal funded by drug traffickers, disguised as a socialist. It's the same situation as in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, where dictatorships are in place and political agendas are driven by the criminals who control the politicians in power.

Honestly, this feels like a symbolic battle with real-world consequences. Maps aren't just tools—they reflect who gets to define the world. Sheinbaum throwing in the América Mexicana comment is top-tier diplomatic trolling though.

It's beyond me why Cartel-Claudia got so worked up about this.
The name was not agreed upon in some international agreement, anyone can use whatever name they like.

There are plenty of cases where anyone uses the name they prefer. E.g. the UK and France call the same thing The Channel / English Channel and La Manche respectively, without anyone suing anyone else in the other country.
It's preposterous.

To add to this, there is absolutely no negative feedback listed about her on Wikipedia. Apparently not even opponents have any criticisms of her outside of 1 line (all are labeled as "crises" or were apologized for). You'd think she was a saint: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudia_Sheinbaum

But in reality, you can easily find news pieces about her centralizing power under the president as an authoritarian, preventing the judicial branch from stopping anything she says, and blackmailing politicians from the opposing side to give her a supermajority to amend the constitution at will.

México, the 52nd state.

I sue Mexico for suing the USA for renaming the Gulf.
Now, please someone 6L sue me for suing Mexico for suing the USA for renaming the Gulf.

Seriously, Trump seems to be living in an alternative reality.

Yes, but either way, It is filthy and it smells bad.
It should have been called the Gulf of Texas.
