Microphone Is messing with me

I swear I usually know what to do, but this is really getting my blood boiling.

I got a new analog mic/headset duo. So i put the headphones into the green port, and mic into the pink. I can get the mic to work fine by UN-muting it in the volume control and talking into it. But when i go to "sound recorder" nothing gets recorded. I go into CS/Steam and keep the mic un-muted, i hear my voice. But in-game nobody else does. (yes i hold down the voice button).

any help before i return this?

Have you tried setting it up in msn messenger? I've found it sometimes helps sort other software out with the microphone.

See, microsoft software isn't entirely rubbish, just mostly!! hehe.
