i have a 19" LCD monitor and it will periodically turn off but the power is still on. if i stand up and i can just make out the display that was on the monitor. Sometimes it will happen ever 3 seconds sometimes i can play for quite a while. Someone suggested its a light issue. Is this correct? and if so is it an easy fix?

The backlight has gone/is going. If under warranty, take it back. If not, probably the best bet is to chuck it as the costs of a new one (with warranty, better performance, etc) will not be much more.
