my comp just puked lol

hey guys new to this forum thanks for having me. I recently started to play aroud with my dads old laptop a hand me down if you will. I was going to just format the hard drive and re install windows and all the drivers(I have the restoration cd's) my plan was to just use it for music and word processing but after I formatted it it will load the windows install cd go through the process of install and then it tells me to take out the cd and restart but it just keeps restarting itself. i can only get to the dos prompt. help me what do I do?? it is a gateway solo 5300 and it worked before.... kinda wished i just left it.?? any help would be awesome.
